Before you can send your customers any SMS marketing, you first need to obtain an 'opt-in'. A great place to obtain an opt-in from customers is on your checkout page. You can personalize your check-out page opt-in box in your Shopify back office. Then, use it to offer your customers special deals and updates about your brand in return for an opt-in.

In this article, we take you through 5 steps you need to follow to obtain opt-ins from your customers at checkout.
Step 1 - Update your sign-up option
To do this:
- Go to Settings - Checkout
- Scroll down to the Email Marketing section.
- Make sure "Show a sign-up option at checkout" is checked.
Then click the Save button at the top of the page.
Step 2 - Update your marketing sign-up language
Your marketing sign-up language needs to specify that you will send SMS marketing. To do this:
- Go to Settings Checkout
- Scroll down to the Checkout language section.
- Press the Manage checkout language button.
- Search for “Checkout Marketing”.
- In the field called Accept marketing checkbox label paste the following:
Keep me up to date on news and exclusive offers by email and text messages*
Save the changes by clicking the Save button at the top of that page.
Step 3 - Set up a field to collect the customer's phone number
To do this:
- Go to Settings - Checkout
- Find the Form options section.
- Change the Shipping address phone number to Optional.
Then, save the changes by clicking the Save button at the top of the page.
Step 4 - Add an SMS Specific label to the phone field
This will help to further confirm consent. To do this:
- Go to Settings Checkout
- Scroll down to the Checkout language section.
- Press the Manage checkout language button.
- Search for “Optional phone label”.
- In the fields called Option phone label and Optional phone placeholder, paste the following:
Phone - exclusive offers (per checkbox above)
Step 5 - Add the details of their SMS consent in a footer
To do this:
- Search for “Terms of Service” in the Checkout shop policies section
- Paste in the following text:
"By checking this box I consent to receive automated marketing by text message through an automatic telephone dialing system. Consent is not a condition to purchase. Message and Data rates apply. Opt-Out by texting STOP. View Privacy Policy"
Then click the Save button at the top of that page.
Here is an example of how a checkout looks after all of these steps are taken:
